Why and what to do if your beard changes color?
That's it: you've finally dared to let your beard grow! As the days go by, however, you notice that the colors don't match those of your hair: they're (too) lightened, if not reddish! Even though you take good care of your beard, your beard color doesn't seem to match your hair color? Here are the explanations and solutions from your favorite barber, Barbier Bonhomme, who always takes the time to advise you.
Who's responsible for your coloured beard?
Inevitably, you're looking for explanations for your beard's disharmonic color, which clashes with your natural hair color. Gentlemen, the culprits are already well known to barbers and hairdressers. Bonhomme offers to tell you all about them without further ado...
A few hair courses for our bearded friends
Dear bearded ones, you're only suffering from your genes! Once again, it's all down to genetics. So you're not subject to severe depigmentation, but rather to the coloring of your natural hairs, for a beard that's ginger, blond, brown, chestnut, etc.
The culprit? Melanin, a natural pigment that makes up your genetic heritage and colors your hair and beard. We currently distinguish two melanins: dark eumelanin and light phelomelanin. In addition to melanin, the "MC1R" gene is responsible for beard color. It's this gene that can cause beard colors to blend together... artistically. Note that if you have both "MC1R" genes, your beard color will be entirely reddish!
The sun, beard trimming... potential culprits?
It's only logical to ask whether external natural elements such as the sun or shaving your beard can contribute to a brightening or darkening of your beard. When it comes to beard care, Barbier Bonhomme assures you that the sun can indeed create a brighter effect, but will not fundamentally transform the nature of your hair. The same applies to beard shaving, which never darkens your hair. A barber worthy of the name will always confirm this!
Barber Bonhomme gives you his best tips
As a barber and hairdresser, your barber salon Bonhomme offers several solutions to ensure that you are happy with the color of your beard.
Play with your beard color!
It's always good to remember that your ginger beard is natural and, as such, is undoubtedly the beard color that best suits your skin tone. Our advice as a barber? Quite simply, let your natural hair color speak for itself: today, being different is more than trendy, and the best way to create your own look is to match your natural hair color to that of your beard by resorting to beard coloring. Examples of bearded men include Russell Crow (in his youth, of course) and Christian Bale.
Haircolour: a trendy and easy classic
Despite all our advice, you'd still like to turn to beard coloring ? You're right, today's beard dyes are accessible and varied, allowing you to play with beard colors: natural or fancy, it's up to you to choose the color that best suits your personality and style.
However, while beard coloring allows you to go from light to brown, the reverse is more difficult. In this case, you'll have to resort to beard bleaching, even if it means damaging your beard hair. To learn more about the best ways to care for your beard after bleaching, here's a dedicated article.
